History:
"Just a Chill Guy," also known as "My New Character," originated from a digital artwork created by American artist Phillip Banks, who posted the image on Twitter on October 4, 2023. The artwork depicts an anthropomorphic brown dog wearing a grey sweater, blue jeans, and red sneakers, standing casually with hands in his pockets and displaying a relaxed, smirking expression (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024).
Banks originally captioned his post: "my new character. his whole deal is he's a chill guy that lowkey doesn't give a fuck" (Banks, 2023). While the artwork gained some initial traction following its publication, achieving moderate success within online communities, it would not reach true viral status until nearly a year later.
The meme experienced its first major viral breakthrough on August 30, 2024, when TikTok user @blitzerzz created a slideshow featuring the Chill Guy artwork combined with other popular memes of the time, including audio from Roddy Ricch's "Ricch Forever" and references to the animated series Family Guy (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024). This marked the beginning of the character's explosive popularity on TikTok, where it resonated particularly strongly with Gen Z audiences.
The viral momentum continued throughout September 2024, with a TikTok edit on September 4 using a quote from the television series Dexter gaining over 4.5 million views, and a repost the following day reaching over 13.8 million views (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024). Similar edits featuring "chill quotes" from mainstream television shows found comparable success across TikTok and Twitter, establishing a format where the character served as a mascot for laid-back philosophical observations.
The meme reached unprecedented heights during its third major resurgence on November 21, 2024, driven in part by the creation of a cryptocurrency token named $CHILLGUY on the Solana blockchain platform (Decrypt, 2024). The token's market capitalization peaked at approximately $580 million, fueled by social media trends, celebrity endorsements including a post from Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, and widespread fear of missing out among investors (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024).
Major corporations and organizations quickly adopted the meme for their marketing campaigns, including Adidas, Sprite Europe, the NFL, March Madness, Uber Eats, and the Indian political party BJP (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024). The character's universal appeal as a symbol of emotional composure and stress-free living made it particularly effective for brand messaging during late 2024.
However, the meme's commercial success sparked controversy when Banks announced on November 21, 2024, that he had copyrighted the artwork and would issue takedown notices for unauthorized commercial uses, particularly targeting "unauthorized merchandise and shitcoins" (Banks, 2024). This led to significant backlash from cryptocurrency communities, resulting in Banks being doxxed and temporarily setting his social media accounts to private (Decrypt, 2024).
The cultural impact of the Chill Guy meme extends beyond social media virality. The character became associated with discussions about male mental health and served as a counter-narrative to the high-stress, always-online culture prevalent in contemporary digital spaces. Music producer Gia Margaret's piano piece "Hinoki Wood," frequently paired with Chill Guy content, peaked at number two on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 for the week of December 7, 2024 (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024).
By the end of 2024, the artwork was recognized as one of the top ten best memes of the year by USA Today and one of the top eight by ScoopWhoop, cementing its place in internet culture history (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024).
Notes about the Creator/s:
Creator (Media and Meme):
Phillip Banks, known online as @phillipbankss, is a digital artist from North Carolina who has been active in online art communities for over a decade (Backpack Exchange, 2024). According to his Tumblr account, "Phillip Banks" serves as a pseudonym for the artist (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024). Banks has built a dedicated following across platforms including Tumblr, Twitter/X, and Instagram, creating hundreds of unique characters through his career.
Banks' artistic work is primarily character-driven, featuring what he describes as "a motley crew of animals, pop culture icons and fantastical creatures" (Backpack Exchange, 2024). His approach to the Chill Guy character was intentionally designed to embody ultimate relaxation and emotional detachment. As Banks explained in his Instagram stories: "The main design focus was coming up with a character who you could tell was chill guy but I also wanted people to know that he lowkey didn't give a f**k" (Sportskeeda, 2024).
When the artwork gained massive commercial success without his permission, particularly in cryptocurrency markets, Banks took a firm stance on intellectual property protection. He stated: "I do not, and will never, endorse or condone any crypto-related projects involving my work" (Republic World, 2024). Banks clarified that while he doesn't object to brand accounts using the character as a trend or individual users creating content for entertainment, he draws the line at unauthorized commercial exploitation.
The artist has since embraced some commercial opportunities, beginning the sale of official Chill Guy plush toys in December 2024, demonstrating his commitment to maintaining control over his creation's commercial applications (Wikipedia Contributors, 2024).
