History:
"Philosoraptor" emerged as one of the most intellectually engaging advice animal memes, transforming a commercial t-shirt design into a beloved internet character that challenged users with profound philosophical questions and delightful paradoxes wrapped in prehistoric charm.
The source illustration was created by Sam Smith and released on October 8, 2008, as a t-shirt design for his online retailer "Lonely Dinosaur." Smith revealed in correspondence with Know Your Meme that the concept for Philosoraptor was conceived during the early summer of 2008, with the final image completed in late summer and t-shirts going into production in August and September of that year (Know Your Meme, 2025).
Smith's creative process was notably sophisticated for what would become meme source material. He explained that "the image itself was a mix of several images of velociraptors I got online, which I compressed to one-color images, then mixed together. I took the jaw off of one at the mouth, and cut it open to make the mouth look like it was hanging open" (Know Your Meme, 2025). The design also incorporated an eagle's talon that was resized and edited to look like a raptor claw, demonstrating Smith's careful attention to creating the perfect contemplative pose.
The inspiration for the design came from Smith's friend Devin, a philosophy major who was constantly "hunched over his desk thinking." Smith decided to call him a "philosoraptor," adopting a portmanteau that was already circulating as internet humor. Interestingly, the term "philosoraptor" had appeared online much earlier, with one of the earliest documented uses found in a 1998 quote from a ten-year-old named Hope from Kentucky on the children's site EnchantedLearning: "I like the philosoraptor because it spits an acidy type of substance in its victims eyes" (Know Your Meme, 2025).
The transformation from commercial design to internet meme began on February 18, 2009, when the earliest archived appearance of an image macro featuring the Lonely Dinosaur illustration was posted on 4chan's /b/ board (Know Your Meme, 2025). This marked the beginning of Philosoraptor's evolution from t-shirt graphic to philosophical meme generator.
The meme's appeal lay in its unique combination of humor and genuine intellectual engagement. Unlike other advice animals that focused on social situations or motivational content, Philosoraptor specialized in posing thought-provoking questions that often revealed logical paradoxes or challenged common assumptions. Typical Philosoraptor memes might ask: "If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?" or "If tomatoes are fruits, is ketchup a smoothie?"
The format proved remarkably successful and spawned significant community engagement. By July 2011, Memegenerator.net had registered 38,000 Philosoraptor instances and 12 different template variations, demonstrating the meme's sustained popularity and creative versatility (iTech Post, 2023). Smosh published a notable listicle containing 20 examples of Philosoraptor memes, helping to cement its place in mainstream internet culture.
In November 2009, Philosoraptor was officially added to the Advice Dog "variations" section on Encyclopedia Dramatica, marking its recognition as a legitimate member of the advice animal family. On November 26, 2009, an entry for Philosoraptor was created on Urban Dictionary, further documenting its cultural significance.
Sam Smith's response to his design's viral adoption demonstrated remarkable understanding of meme culture and intellectual property ethics. In December 2009, he sent an email stating: "We're not exactly sure who started putting text over it, and far be it from us to try and control a meme... We put a creative commons non-commercial license on it, so all your stuff is cool and we think what you're doing is great" (Know Your Meme, 2025). However, Smith also expressed concern that people might assume his original design was simply copied from existing internet content rather than being his original creation.
This situation highlighted an important dynamic in meme culture: the tension between original creators who invest time and creativity in producing content and the internet communities that transform that content into cultural phenomena. Smith's approach of embracing the meme while seeking acknowledgment of his original contribution became a model for how creators could engage positively with viral adaptations of their work.
The meme's intellectual focus distinguished it from other advice animals and contributed to its longevity. While formats like Socially Awkward Penguin addressed social anxiety and Courage Wolf provided motivational content, Philosoraptor carved out a unique niche for philosophical humor that appealed to users seeking more cerebral entertainment.
